Lexington pest control

We are Kentucky's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Lexington raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Lexington pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Lexington Raccoon Control Tip: Do raccoons eat mice / rats?
It is a general thought that raccoons eat mice and rats because they love to hunt them down, especially when they live in the same environment, but it should be noted that raccoons do not seek out mice or rats for their meal. They only eat it when the opportunity presents itself to them.

Why do raccoons not eat rodents?
Raccoons are outdoor animals, except during winter when they spend almost the entire time in their home sleeping. They love to search for their food outside, and a rat or mouse is not likely to be seen outdoors. Rodents prefer to stay hidden in holes or human homes that they have infested. It is usually rare for raccoons and rodents to cross paths, but when they do, it's only ideal for the raccoons to hunt them down and eventually eat them, but they won't go out looking for rodents when they're hungry.

A raccoon will want to secure its environment from the rodent as they are carriers of highly infectious diseases, some of which can be deadly to raccoons. A raccoon finds it very difficult to kill a rodent. They always want to avoid that stress. Rodents have great defensive measures to avoid being killed. Apart from their small body size, they are very intelligent and have a good sense of smell, which helps them to easily detect danger looming and sort out ways of escaping before it becomes too late. Trying to kill a rodent will leave a raccoon oftentimes exhausted, which is why it tries to avoid it at all costs.

What do raccoons eat?
There are wide varieties of options of food for a raccoon. A raccoon is an omnivore, meaning they can feast on plants, animals, and anything that can satisfy their hunger for food. Raccoons love to live close to the water and are good fishers. They also eat other marine foods like toads, crabs, mollusks, crayfish, prawns, and smaller fishes. They love eggs, especially that of birds and chickens. They also like to dig up the soil for insects and worms, especially after a rainy day.

A raccoon also eats plants and is a lover of grains, berries, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and cereals. They like to eat meat also, especially smaller mammals but prefer a dead animal. They eat squirrels, snakes, etc. They can adapt to any environment they find themselves in and survive without any stress to hunt for food. Raccoons that live in urban areas are most likely to be seen around garbage cans in search of food. They also tend to enter houses, shops, and stores of humans to steal foods given to pets or kept in bags.

Using raccoons to eliminate rodents
Although raccoons can be used to eliminate rodents and reduce their infestation, it is not advisable to depend on them as a preventive agent because they are also a pest and can, in turn, breed in your environment. They are more dangerous than rodents and can attack back when they feel threatened. They are also carriers of deadly diseases like rabies and can transmit it through their bites. It's therefore advisable to seek other methods to eliminate rodents instead of using raccoons.

Raccoons are also used for sport to chase down rodents; they love the fun of catching them and killing them before eating them. They don't like eating in an open place but prefer to stay hidden away from the watching eyes of humans and other raccoons. There are numerous food sources a raccoon can and love eating, and a mouse or rat can be part of it, but rodents are not considered a constant meal for a raccoon as it only kills and eats it if the opportunity arrives. The stress of killing a rodent is way too much for a raccoon, it could use that time to easily search for other easily available food. So, the answer to the question of whether raccoons eat mice or rats is yes, but they don't consider it as their best option when it comes to finding a meal.
